If it's mentioned in both Detroit papers, does that make it more true?

I dunno.. I think it's true what they say, there's gonna be fewer companies.. having Ford and GM merge seems more appealing than each of them merging (or getting bought by) some foreign company.. :dontknow:

Sounds like a good idea. Combine both companies to create one giant sucking sound. :pow:

As I posted in the thread in The Pub:
Don't think too deeply about it. From what I've heard, it was an alliance in order to increase buying power for raw materials to gain even greater economies of scale. It's not the first time that we've done a JV. Has anyone driven one of the new FWD 6-speed trannies that were jointly developed? Anyone remember Covisint? Ok, maybe that one didn't work.

they have been working together for a long time. We used to do some testing on the skid pad for GM and they also did stuff for Ford

When should I expect my Ford to start breaking? I've been out of warranty the last 11000 miles.

Yeah, GM and Ford would never merge companies.... :bs: Better read your history, folks. Ford, GM, and Chrysler have been merging since day one with other companies. Buick, Cadillac, Olds (RIP), Pontiac, and Chevrolet were all seperate AMERICAN companies at one time, merged together to form one. Ford also acquired Lincoln, which was founded by Henry Leland, the same guy who initially founded..... Cadillac

We need to do something folks, besides sending all of our money overseas, or our kids will all be speaking Japanese and Chinese as their FIRST language... I agree with Trunk, this is a great idea, one that I have been in favor of for years. FOGM sounds A LOT better than HONDA, TOYOTA, DAEWOO, or KIA to me !!!!!!!!!!

They're all pieces of shit, pick a color and drive.
I think this is a poor idea. The companies should stay separate and have more competition.
BTW Honda's and Toyota's are more American than fords or chevy's anymore. Besides the fact that they're assembled here, some of their parts are built here, they do all of their testing here and employ many people. If you look at the stocks they have an American addess. Now its not to say the share holders dont live here, but who cares? If they employ people to build their cars here the moeny stays here. Or would you rather have the share holders live here and the cars built in Mexico or Canada. :dontknow: you tell me.
Oh yeah and i forgot, hondas and totoyas last longer, have fewer parts wear out over its lifespan, and get better fuel economy, run smoohter, handle better, and the employees at the american assembly plants in the midwest are more than happy with their pay and work environment. I went to school with a lot of Honda employees in Ohio that worked at an R&D center down there.

X2 !!!!! 80% of Toyota and Honda's profits come out of American pockets, and the majority of that money goes back to Tokyo. How much foreign aid is Japan giving to us ???? Zilch, Zip, Zero !!! How much are we giving them ??? PLENTY !!!! They sell our products here virtually tariff-free, but tariff the HELL out of our products we try to sell in THEIR country. And another thing I will tell you, I work a second job at Advanced Auto on the weekends, and believe me, imports break PLENTY. And when they do, you pay 2-3 times over a comparable American car to get it fixed, if you can even get the parts.... :dontknow: Americans are in for some hard times if they don't WAKE UP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Being a professional technician I can vouch the reliability. There are exceptions but other than brakes, normal fluid changes and tires they last forver. The last time I've done anything other than that stuff on a jap car was a clutch in a 1989 Prelude with 250K (2nd clutch) and runs great still!
Although Yes the parts are much more expensive. No argument there.
Oh yeah BTW, I've never owned a foreign car and dont really plan on it.

[QUOTE=Oh yeah BTW, I've never owned a foreign car and dont really plan on it.[/QUOTE]
Now there is the best thing you have said so far. The japs have some nice running motors, no doubt. But the rest of the car rusts away around it. I am also a tech (ASE Master Tech plus L1), and I can tell you that GM and Ford have 250K motors also. Most import drivers don't keep the cars long enough to ever realize the 250K motor, for that matter few people keep any car that long. My wifes 1998 GTP has 135K+ on it and runs as good as the day it was built, engine and trans have not been touched, except for the water pump. The real issue is a perception of quality that the imports have, the truth is the quality is very comparable, but it's very hard to change the perception on the public

I know what the problem is, the american auto makers are trying to play their game. We need to go back to making powerful RWD, fullsize, stylish cars. With the technology we have, they can make a V8 family car with 250-300hp and get really nice fuel mileage. The asians will still make "global" cars that are small and FWD. Most americans will put up with a little more at the gas pump for a substantial car with some comfort and quality. Look at the way the Chrysler LX series are selling, and that is a Chrysler, the smallest company of the big 3 domestics. I have to wonder what the sales of a full size Impala or Galaxy would be, since they have a larger customer base.
