View Full Version : Need some insite on a LSX build

I have a decent offer on my current powertrain and I am contemplating a LSX build. Looking to build a LSX motor with 400+ ci, aluminum rods, light weight crank, flat top pistons, really good set of heads, aluminum intake that will accept a 4500 series carb., possible 3 stages of nos with a fogger and my current 2 stage plate. I've seen some really nice N/A cars run in the 8's so I know it's possible to run with the turbo guys in radial. Any information you guys can provide is much appreciated.

You may as well go turbo if you want to go drag radial. As for LSX parts. LSX GMPP iron block would be a good start. I would talk to ET about some heads. If you wanna compete in drag radial you are looking at c5r or Canted valve stuff. big Big money. The rest of it is standard junk though.

Side Note... Not trying to offend, but what is with the girl leaning over with the Halter Top with Black Bra staps in full effect:roll: Isnt that like a dude dressed up with black dress shoes wearing white tube socks?!?!?!?!?!?

I try to ask some questions and this is what I get. "PHUCK STAINES" And Sean obviously you don't race and you don't understand what it takes to go fast. If you don't have any insite what-so-ever please don't post.

I haven't paid too much attention to Drag radial this year so I have to ask, where has the bar been set, locally at least?

You should just run a big turbo. I think it would be cheaper in the long run than throwing a couple hundred dollars worth of nitrous at it every time you go to the track. :dontknow:

Yeah your not going to be competitive with DR and nitrous. No one is unless you run the 08 rules NMRA class. Preliminary rule announcements have the turbo guys pegged at 85mm turbos. This will give blower cars a more even field but nitrous cars will still be fighting the tire.
You need to make roughly 1400hp to play in any of the NMRA DR classes and be competitive. Sure you can do it with spray. But the tire is not going to be happy about it. If you had 5 kits it might work out.
Hence the recomendation to switch to turbo. If you plan on running the Milan season this year be preparred to bring at least 2000+ hp becuase thats what it takes to play with the big boys. You will have to be sub 7.90 if you want to be competitive. Last i saw your were going very high 8's. You will need to make double the 1000ish Hp you made last year to move that 1 second you will need to make the final.
If you want to really really run nitrous get into some canted valve heads run 3 kits and build a 440 ish inch motor. However it would be far more durable and cost effective to build a big block for DR if you really must run nitrous. Building a high dollar LSX makes no sense unless you sepcifically want the wieght savings.
Of course you could always run a small block and little chiefs to.
Also ORSCA went away this year. That sucked.

Kemp, Ohio Boys (both cars), Filipowski, Pande and a few others have all been in the 7's and a few do it every pass. I wouldn't be surprised to see the top 4-5 in the 7's next season but fast cars break and spin so I think a low 8-car could still go enough rounds to win the overall championship if you go to every race.
Flipper went 7.7's at 190+
Pande went like 7.5-7.6 at 190+
Kempf has been 7.7-7.8 at 185+
Ohio Boys (Steve) has been 7.7's at 185+
Ohio Boys (Mike) has been 7.9's at 180+
I think you can do it with slightly less than 2k hp though. Didn't Tom have his on the engine dyno at some point?
Look at what Flipper went 190+ with as well. 368 inch 23 deg (AFR 215's) and a blow-thru. Not exotic stuff.

I can't speak from first hand knowldge but word was that Kempfs old motor made 1800+. This new motor from what little I know about it should be easily capable of making 2000+ with a 106 but I don't know if they are using one ?

Yeh I dunno either...
But back to nitrous radial cars. Vince's motor was for sale for like 11k and it had gone 8.2's at 167 on a single plate kit at 3250 lbs on stock suspension and 28" et streets. Drop a few hundred lbs and add some nitrous and you're competitive for reasonable money.
Here's another badass sb nitrous car:

Well Obviously nitrous can go rounds. If you want to win a points race it might be a workable deal. However winning a race will be much more difficult. Kind funny noone noticed i Said NMRA and that it is mustang only.
Yeah you could get competitive but it would be alot easier with a bigblock. You will have a much easier time harnessing the power with a bigblock becuase it should make enough power to leave on that tire and then bring the nitrous on down track a little ways. Its the only successful deal I have seen working and at that its still really tough.
I also didn;t think anyone had gone 7.xx anything on hose yet. Is that a big tire raidal car ? 325/60/16 ? if you could muster that kind of performance at the Milan event it would be very competitive.

I'm sure he was on either the 315/60 or the 325/50 more than likely the 315. Stock suspension, etc. That car would fit Milan's rules and probably be a little on the heavy side even. Nitrous cars can be pretty light at Milan.
Quickest bbc + nitrous to date is probably close to the same although there are a few guys in similar classes going almost as fast with a lot less tire like Artis over in PSCA who has gone 7.8's on 275/60 radials at like 3300+ lbs.
Smokie Hall has been deep in the 7's with bbc/nitrous. There are a ton of fast radial cars out there and plenty of them are doing it without turbos.

I don;t think anyone is debating that Nitrous radial cars can be fast. There are a few out there. What I do not think we will see anytime soon is nitrous cars winning in radial unless of course something changes with nitrous in the foreseable future. The problem is trying to bring it on soft enough to keep from blowing the tire off. If someone figures out a better mousetrap, nitrous could really shake the class up hard.

Most people don't bother trying since they see a lot of success from the turbo people. Once they put too much weight on the turbo cars, people will start trying nitrous again and some sort of balance will eventually exist. There just isn't enough parity between all the different radial classes yet so people can always find somewhere else to race.

Well looking at the latest proposed NMRA drag radial rules in confrence at PRI its tough to say if that parity is comming next season. NMCA of course will follow some of this rules change but It will still likely favor turbo cars.
The real problem again is that even if nitrous cars can make the power its going to be very difficult for them to cathc up with the turbo/supercharged cars due to the way the power comes on.
If nitrous syetsm get a heavy rework in R&D this winter it is possiable we could see a much more linear power apply from nitrous users and potentially more parity. Even now with weight the issue is still going to be the power ramp rate and how to work with the tire in regards to it.
Obviously giving the ntirous cars a few pounds will help with traction in the first 600 ft but beyond that pushing wind and staying hooked up will be problematic. If they give the nitrous guys a few pounds and a wing the playing field my even up alot.

if were talking milan. it will take 8teens tp 20s in all motor class this yr. the drag radial class will be handled by turbo cars easy. you will see some mid 7s runs out there this yr. with the sfi shit going on that maybe a cut off of 7.5.cars wnt be able to pass cert if they change the sfi cert for 7.5s.

I don't think we'll see many 8.teens or 8.20's passes in all motor. Maybe a few but by no means a regular occurrence.
