as for pointers, i learned a lot from trying a bunch of different tutorials out there. a good tip for cutting out things is to use the pen tool, the BEST tool for getting the best edge. plus it makes it easy to get the shape perfect. Also edit the image with a high resolution file, then after done editing scale it down. get very familiar with layers, blending, layer effects, opacity, etc. Another good section is the brightness/contracts levels, hue/saturation, and color balance.
