OK, So here it is!
I got my blower back after 19 days from the day I shipped it in. This was an upgrade from a V2 S-Trim to the SI-Trim impeller as well as a straight polished discharge. Total cost was $730 which included the volute and impeller upgrade as well as a minor rebuild and shipping. If you dont want a rebuild the total cost would be $330 plus shipping. I was advised to do a rebuild not because my blower was out of spec but because he said the SI-trim spins faster and would benefit from the newer style bearings. Basically for good insurance, not that the rebuild was because of shaft play or bearing noise.
They also sent me back my original S-trim impeller and volute! Here is a comparison via pics:
its hard to see but the impeller is definitely larger on the SI-trim, the curved sections are much more pronounced.

Is this like a baby YSi?

Sweet. The back blade is taller and has more of a hook to it.

04-29-2008, 09:28 PM
yeah, here are the specs:
S-Trim:
1000CFM
20psi max
72% efficiency
SI-Trim:
1150CFM
28PSI max
78% efficiency
Its supposed to be a much better blower. The thing Im most looking forward to is the efficiency, im wondering what it is going to do to intake temps.

Oh yeah, this impeller and volute is designed for the V3 blowers that are self contained units (no oil feed/ drain). apparently they can be retrofitted to the V1 and V2 units as well they just wont sell them outright.

At 78% you should see a pretty good power boost just by the lower intake temps alone.
avbcon12

thats what im hoping for, thats a huge jump from what I had. The boost is supposed to come on much lower too in the RPMs too.

its like the T-trim
yeah, totally different from the YSi
although the efficiency is supposed to be the same (78%). I can say that mine runs very cool intake temps. But Ive also got a large FMIC.
Good luck. The step up from s to t-trim is a nice feeling

Yeah, the YSi is way bigger, too big for my engine. Ill be running a front mount too (31x12x3) so I hope to be about 20-30 degrees above ambient

I have a YSi, but my combo isn't even close to done yet.
I picked up a newer procharger 2 core intercooler that I'm going to front mount, but all of the tubing issues need to get done. I'm thinking about taking it down to Team Z and have them make up some nice stuff for that, but we'll see how money goes....

Yeah, I bought cheap aluminum piping off of ebay (yet to show up here) and Ill fab it up myself. Im a good 2-3 weeks away from firing it up.
Still debating what to do with my MAF, wait to see if my draw through and bypass valve is up for the task or buy a blow through and blow off valve....

mine is usually about 15 above ambient
the ebay piping works fine, i got most of mine from there as well as t-bolt clamps
go with the blow thru maf and biggest bypass you can, youll have alot less surge issues

Which MAF do you run? I can get a PMAS 3" pro-tube for $225 but dont really know the quality of those specific MAFs. I wonder if the new Abaco MAFs are as good as they say too. they are $400 though.
how big is "big"? like 50mm+ or is 50mm too small too?

I'm going to be an odd ball and run a blow through carb.
I spent a couple bucks and got a monster procharge blow off valve. I figured it couldn't hurt to spare the impeller and whatnot if I ever decided to move up to a cog belt setup from serpentine.

Im trying to stay to "tax return" budget so something like that is out of the question. hmm.

Have you pulled the bumper off yet and see how that intercooler is going to fit? I have a procharger 3 core standard with is 27 x 12.5 x 3 and I'm unsure exactly how it's going to go.
I'm assuming the lower you can mount it the better so it gets max airflow.
I should pull the front bumper cover off this weekend and start to eyeball things.

Im sure it will be similar to this one, hes using a 4" core though.

Not too many people put this much effort into what you are doing, I see fox body A/A setups on corral and stuff and they look like total shit.. I am looking forward to seeing your finished product, you may inspire some people to sell there aftercoolers, I know I hate mine... Its more work than its worth.. good luck man and be sure to post up lots of pics!!

Just my .02 but the cooler will be well worth it by far. You might need to cut the inner bumber up a bit but who cares. Most people that over spin the blower are in the range of 250+ on the inlet temps. But not alot of people go thru the hassle of checking. Witch kills HP gains. There is a fine line for tuning and happyness. With the cooler on my old set up we went down to 160 deg on the inlet temps. I know the Renagade guys are up over 325+ But they are also spining thie shit out of everything. Mine was only at 6500rpms and a wopping 15-17 lbs of boost. So if you can get the cooler in there do it you will be happy in the end.

thanks a lot, I liked my aftercooler but for me and my cars use it wasnt working well. I mean, for 1/4 mile passes they are great, dump ice in and have below ambient intake temps. But with me I drive on the street and occasionally open track and theres no way to keep it from heat soaking so thats what drove me to make the swap.
I sold my aftercooler for a little more than what im going to buy all the parts for to make the A/A setup. The link on the corral I posted has some good pics, he did a nice job. Youre right though, many people hack them together without much thought.
Ill be sure to take lots of pics, I am going to try to route piping and mount the intercooler without removing the bumper cover though so I dont know how good the install pics will be.
thanks again!

I am for sure going to use an intercooler. Im looking for intake air temps in the 20* above ambient range.
the results with my water/ air setup are in this link as well as my plans for the intercooler setup.

The bumper cover is actuly really easy to take off. It would make things easier to put in and mock up. But either way good luck and keep us posted.

how old was your blower, to just make sure things were cool with a rebuild??
not a bad price..

It was older than 6 years because vortech didnt have a record in their system of it. They only keep records for 6 years, I bought it used so there's no telling really. They rebuilt it because the SI-trim can spin higher and they wanted to step to the more recent bearings. The blower didnt really need a rebuild but they advised to do so. They have a clause in their rebuild policy that if they recommend a rebuild they have the right to KEEP YOUR BLOWER if you refuse a rebuild... So I went ahead with it.

Pete, It wont be running for about a month I bet but after that Ill be around and at least able to drive it to meets.

sounds like it was the right thing to do. Come to think of it, mine's older than 6 years too..

Yeah, I only had driven this blower about 1000 miles though in the last few years ive had it so I know it was still a very low mileage blower.
I forgot to add, I just sold the Volute and Impeller to someone that wanted to upgrade their SC-trim so I made $225 of that $727 back which brings the grand total to $502

whered you sell it at??
ill probably do this next year as i think a rebuild might be a good idea anyway..

I was telling greg about this last night. Kinda weird, but i gues safe in a way. Mine must be 6 years old by now.

the cost of the rebuild was for sure offset by the price i sold my volute/ impeller. If you dont ask for them back they will keep them.
I forgot to add that if they recommend a rebuild and you do not want them to rebuild it there is a $100 (plus shipping both ways of course) service fee to have them send your blower back to you in pieces. So I guess it wouldnt be a total loss but you would end up with a completely disassembled and unbalanced unit thats basically good for nothing.

If i send mine out, i will just have them upgrade it. Seems more worth it than having themlook it over and fixing it. I know they want like 900 bucks to replace seals and bearings. thats crazy..i will replace those.
