Well, I bought my first house in March of this year. It was a foreclosed home and hadn't been occupied in two years. Due to this, and incompetitent city workers, the house was not winterized and I spent two weeks chasing burst pipes and other miscellaneous plumbing problems. The funny thing is, I assumed the full bath (we have one full and one half) was one of the more up to date rooms in the house (built in 1974) and I was confident that remodeling that room could be left for a later date. Unfortunately, the previous owners or whoever did the previous remodel didn't do a very good job and that "later date" is pretty much right now.

About a month ago, I discovered that while the shower was running, water was pouring down the side of the house under the overhang (the tub is mounted over the overhang). I could also grab the toilet and rock it left to right a good half inch off of the ground. The vinyl tile between the toilet and tub started to peel around the edges of the tile and a foul odor was occasionally apparent.

Here is the beginning of my project log. I was going to just wait until I finished but I figured its more fun if I update it as time goes by.

I didn't take any pictures during teardown but the subflooring and underlayment was saturated and began rotting. We cut back to a clean subfloor and started over. We also pulled the entire soffet from the exterior and replaced it, from one side of the house to the other, just to be safe.

08.27.08 - Soffet, insulation of both exterior walls, drywalling

During this time, I also changed the size of the window opening, shortening it in half. This will still allow plenty of natural light but without the awkwardly large window on the tiled wall. Previously, a three panel medicine cabinet was mounted flush with the wall over the vanity. I restudded that portion of the wall because the studs were cut out for the cabinet. I moved the electrical for the vanity lights back into the attic and will be running recessed lighting throughout the room.

Well, I lost my job on Thursday so I spent a lot of time on the bathroom. Before the backboard, I relocated the shower plumbing to a more functional height.

08.30.08 - Tile layout

Today was a slow progress day. I found out my window won't come in for two weeks and I'm waiting for the window before I tile the tub area. I can still finish the floor and recessed lighting before the window guy (also getting all new windows, siding, and gutters throughout the house) comes so those will be the next few updates.

Of course, this was just a quick layout, without cutting any tiles or deciding where to place the short/modified pieces. It still gives you guys a good idea of how the floor will turn out.

wow, great job. Lots of work right there. Alot of people dont understand that foreclosyres arent always the great deal that they seem.

I would also tile the entire shower area. I hate painting the shower areas.
