ring and pinion for the rear differential Its been "hanging up" while in reverse.

I hate to keep driving it this way for fear of being stranded...

lol

I got this thing dirt cheap and now I see why they sold it.
previous owners did alot of off road muddin and never changed the fluid in the differential and now its "non-functional"
I need to get this done before winter for sure.

What gear ratio is it? Common is 3.55.

OK, well, she explained it wrong. AGAIN.

She needs the clutch set for the posi-trac. 12 bolt 9 1/4 rear axle.

Im sorry but I think its more than just that..

i dont see how that can cause it to "drag" or "hangup" while in reverse

granted Im no mechanic but i do know a little bit of how these things work..

that is all.

have you pulled the cover and inspected the gear lube for water or excessive metal particles? you may be experiencing posi chatter. changing the lube and posi additive may cure your "hang up in reverse"
no other noises?
if they did a lot of "muddin" it may have water mixed in.

There was no water or shavings in the gear lube, at least that I saw when I pulled the cover. But the clutches for the posi are wore badly enough that I would call it a problem. No other problems. The rear and pinion were clean, no bearing slop. She went and picked up the clutches today so I'll be putting it back together today and we'll see if that fixes it.

they are a Bitch to replace. you need flat washers or some form of spacers and a threaded rod cut to length, to "compress the new friction slightly(in the center, by backing off on the threads, then secure a axle shaft (maybe in a large vise straight up and down, and use a 6' pry bar to walk the spiders around, don't forget to lube the clutches before hand.
i think that's a pretty cheep posi. 200 bucks or so gets you a new one, and it much easier.
