For those asking the question can I pop my sim card in and go without getting a data plan or contract extension the answer is yes and no. Here is what I have found out for phones which are not unlocked or jailbroken yet.

To activate the phone without extending your contract you will need to use the pwnage tool or some other jailbreaking software...all very easy to do and only takes five minutes. This will jailbreak and activate the phone. Once this is done you will be able to pop in your AT&T sim card in and go. If you want to use the phone with tmobile you will need to also unlock it with yellowsn0w...this is also a 3 minute process which is easy to do. Note that even though this is a 3g phone, you willnot get 3g speed on the tmobile network as they use a different frequency.

If you use the phone on the at&t network you will eventually start receiving emails from at&t that your data plan does not match the device you are using, also you will not be able to use visual voicemail. I know an individual doing this who is currently on an unlimited PDA data plan for $19.99 a month....for 8 months they have been receiving the text message but AT&T has not switched their data plan on them or extended their contract.

If you do not have a data plan right now on your current contract and follow the steps above you will probably get hit with a crazy data charge if you use this thing to surf the net or whatever.

Unlocked means it can be used on T-Mobile or AT&T.

That is with a new family plan and they are giving the pearls free. Both lines would require a data package, and both have to be new 2 year agreements.
