Honestly buying one of these books is just all of the free information you can gather on the internet composed into a neat little glossy covered stack of paper.
If you plan on referring to it quite a bit it would be worth the investment. I purchased a Modular Motors 4.6/5.4 book and it is nice for just being able to pull it off my book shelf and find what I need without having to do a google search and scroll through 100 pages of Bullshit to find out what I need.

I agree, if possible find someone to help you to start. If not remember to start small, pull a bunch of timing, make sure you have enough fuel and it'll be safe. Watch the plugs after your passes and go from there.
If you're not looking for all that can be had the guide lines provide in each manufactures manuals are usually stupid safe.
OR you can spray it till it breaks and back it off 50. :D
