Nicky Hayden (the last American to win a MotoGP championship in 2006) has been involved in a serious accident. He was hit by a car while training on his bicycle. He's in a medically induced coma with his mother and fiancé en route to the hospital in Italy. They have reportedly been told to "be prepared to make some very difficult decisions". :(

Always my fear when I'm biking, I've had a few close calls.
Last year a friend was killed riding his bike.
I hope he heals up soon!
Honestly, having done some distance running, I thought about doing a triathlon.... but seeing the way cars were when I was running, I have serious concerns about riding a road bicycle... at least when I'm running, I can run against traffic and watch the cars. The thought of riding a road bike with cars flying past from behind me.... no thanksQuote:

I've logged 1000's of miles on my Cannondale over the years, but haven't done much open road riding for 5~ years or so. Too many idiots out there to risk it. Sadly, the stationary at the Y is a poor substitute for fresh air and the wind in your face.
Sounds pretty bleak for Nicky...Hope he catches a miracle.

Terrible news, I was hoping for the best when I heard about this on Wednesday. I just watched him race in WSB last Sunday. I've followed his career since his AMA days.

Dude has gone 200 mph inchs from other motorcycles going the same speed. Taken turns at high speed basically scrapping his knee. Probably crashed many times.....and simply going for a bike ride gets hit by a car. Fucking sucks.

Nicky was never placed into a coma nor has he received any surgery as his condition is too severe to operate. Hayden sustained a traumatic brain injury as well as a broken femur, broken pelvis, and multiple fractured vertebrae. As of May 19, he is currently on life support and his current condition is described as critical with a guarded prognosis."

Definitely ironic when one safely rides a superbike at near 200 MPH with ease and then is taken out while riding a bicycle on an afternoon stroll.

I live in the "country" with dirt roads that are a mess of pot holes. We have people that ride these roads all the time. I often want to stop and ask them why they are choosing to put their lives in the hands of idiots. These roads are a mess and most drive at or near the speed limit(55mph), there is no way I'd ever trust my life to the moron blasting over pot holes while texting or talking on their phones along with yelling at their kids in the back seat. I understand and agree they have every right to share the roads with us but I simply can not put that level of trust into the people driving cars. Do they not drive cars everyday and see how poor distracted people drive?? :shake:

I rode my bicycle 26 miles today - and yes, I thought of & prayed for Nicky Hayden.
Not a bike vs motorcycle for me but track vs street. I feel safer racing at the the track with paramedics close by. Also no drivers texting on the track, no minivan parents not paying attention to the road let alone a motorcycle or bicycle.
Exactly. I know several people who run super bikes at the track and wouldn't even consider ridding down a public street. At the track you're all going in the same direction and you're wearing a ton of safety equipment. Helmet, full leather body suit, gloves, etc. Anything can happen anywhere but I'd rather take my chances at a track.Quote:
