Stocking numbers for Chinook salmon and lake trout will see adjustments in 2017 and 2018 respectfully, following the recommendations of the Lake Michigan Committee. The following adjustments will take place to help reduce the predation pressure on alewives in Lake Michigan.
Chinook salmon stocking will be reduced by 46 percent going into 2017 (compared to 2016 stocking numbers). Along with this adjustment, Michigan will phase out lake trout stocking in Lake Michigan and adjust those efforts to rearing and stocking steelhead. Michigan will continue to stock 1.57 million coho salmon, 580,000 steelhead and 550,000 brown trout to maintain a diverse fishery. It should be noted that roughly 60 percent of Lake Michigan’s Chinook are wild, coming from Michigan’s rivers and streams. More information on salmon in Lake Michigan can be found at
