What brands do you guys use and recoomend? I just want to hit the bare metal area's on the mustang with a rattle can so surface rust doesn't surface..

Any outdoor paint will work, until you get it painted for real.
Get some red-brown bare metal primer from Spies-Hecker or some wash primer from Sikkens, they both seal up bare metal and you can high build prime over the top with a small scuff from a red scotch pad.
DON'T use Krylon or anything oil based, you will have adhesion failure down the road!!
I'd go with what Smooth said. Those are good products. If the car is gonna stay inside and the temps don't constantly change too much, I wouldn't worry about it though. My car sat with spots that were bare for months and they didn't rust.
