Bob - I'm thinking of bringing one of my turntables up from the basement to hook up to my surround sound receiver. Any reasonably priced phone phono pre-amps you'd recommend?

Hey tin...
I just bought a pair of speakers that are 4 ohm 125 watts.... Can I power them with my reciever thats 8 ohm?
Yes you can power them on that amp.
Which amp is in question? A speakers impedance rating isnt a constant value, impedance fluctuates all across the frequency range. Usually, the lower frequencies, under 100Hz or so will most often dip lower than 4 ohms...even down to 1 ohm in some cases. The impedance is highest in the higher frequency range, usually hitting upwards of 30 ohms. If the amp isnt beefy and lacks the current to drive lower impedance loads, youll want to be careful.

Right now I've got them hooked to that adcom amp just test drivng them. I plan on running them off my yamaha reciever as rear speakers in my home theater set up. The speakers in question are Ohm walsh 2's, I think I stole um!
Yeah Ohm Walsh 2s need some beef, and Yamaha sure dont make it . Leave em on the Adcom to be safe. Adcom is known for being able to drive very difficult loads. Those Walsh 2s will be no sweat for it.

This is why tubes cost so much. Awesome craftsmanship. Theyre not something thats mass produced, most are made by hand.

I've got a couple of tubes downstairs. Any idea where to look to see if they're worth something?
