Default T56 input shaft play - Is this normal?

This is a T56 for an LS1 f-body. Has about 42k miles on it. Removed it to upgrade the clutch and noticed that the input shaft has a decent amount of side-to-side movement. There is no fore-aft movement at all. Is this normal? If not, what could be the issue?

No, that looks like it needs a new bearing.

Any idea what would cause that? 42k miles on a stock drivetrain.

Possibly a worn pilot bearing or out of balance pressure plate/clutch assembly. Im not really sure. It seems like a lot of free-play

Agree on the pilot bearing. If the pilot bearing looks good, I wouldn't worry about that much freeplay with the trans out of the car because there is no way that input shaft can move once the trans is installed in the car.

Ask libertys or rpm. If needed the input/bearings can be done from the front without disassembling the whole case
A gun is like a parachute. If you need one, and don't have one, you'll probably never need one again.

I plan to call Liberty next week. Thanks, that's good to know about the case not needing to be disassembled.

0.000 to 0.002 in. (0.00 to 0.05 mm) end play is the proper spec. Use a dial indicator and check end play if your able.
The front bearing is a tapered roller bearing, so slight side to side movement would be normal.
