I used to have a house and 15 acres on Squirrel, right where the Chrysler Tech Center is. I had a barn and I even raised pigs which I feed straight corn and Mice (meeces) really like that corn. I fount the best way to keep mice away is to get a cat! Really!!! After I got a cat, which stayed in the barn by the way, I never had trouble with mice anymore.

    Just my .02.....grr

    They are outside/barn cats.

I grew up on a farm and all the cats were outside cats. We fed them, but they mostly at whatever they could catch. they were friendly, but lived outside. (we only had one at a time).

As others have said, I too have one cat, that kills & eats the mice and
other little monsters. You need to get the "right one".

I don't really take care of her, she takes care of herself. I do leave water
and a small amount of dry food out for her (this keeps them home).

She has a small flap door that she can enter the garage to sleep and
get her food. She sleeps during the day for the most part and hunts
    at night.

I use to set traps and would have to empty about daily. She now pretty
much has wiped out the critter population.

If you could figure out a way to feed & shelter the cat (doesn't take much),
I think it could work, even for your northern property.
