If it's sighted in for 100 yards, it should be fine at 50 also. From what I've found, the 7.62's trajectory is relatively flat between 50 and 100 yards. That's not bad at all for your first time out at 50 yards. It's a lot harder than most would think. AK's aren't known for accuracy. They're designed for reliability and putting a lot of rounds at a target, so don't expect 4" groups at 100 yards with iron sights.
The main keys are sight alignment, sight picture, trigger control (squeeze the trigger, don't "pull" it. You want it to kind of surprise you when it goes off), and follow through. Master those and you'll be ready to take some tactical self defense courses.
