Depends on the product. I used Meguires Hybrid Ceramic Wax (in a blue bottle). I applied mine after a wax without any other steps (no wax stripping/claybar/paint correction etc). My only suggestion, is to ensure you have even coverage or else it can streak. Some will allow you to apply to a wet or dry car. Some say spray on/hose off, but you can also use a damp microfiber cloth to ensure even coverage then rinse.
Don't use the cheap stuff, for $50 you can buy decent stuff.
You wash and then clean with alcohol, then ceramic. Small sections at a time.
IMO the spray is a replacement for wax since it will only last a couple of months but is easy to apply. I would remove any swirls and then apply, no need to wax. I pretty much apply it after every couple of washes and it keeps the daily's shiny.
A true coating is a totally different ball game. coating.jpg

This new stuff is just repackaged "wax-as-you-dry". I just used the blue Meguiers Hybrid ceramic stuff after a guy at work gave me his remaining half bottle. I don't think he knows about a real ceric coat and I honestly wouldn't know the actual difference so I won't act like I do. I will say it worked as advertised so far. It was easy on/off.
