I was lucky enough to buy two of my rods and reels from someone I worked with a while back for pennies on the dollar. Only one rod/reel combo I bought new. Orvis actually makes some really decent entry level combos for $150 bucks now. It's not too terribly expensive to get into the sport now.
Good fly line is $80+, and its more important than any other peice of equipment IMO.

Whole deal out the door for $160. Rod, reel, and line. All you'd need is leaders and flies. I'm sure it's better than the k-mart combo I learned on.

Schultz outfitters in Ypsi still had a few in stock too.

This is even better in my opinion. Worth the extra bucks. That's a very good rig for $295. Someone like us would probably never need more than that..... but as I say that I have 3 combos. lol

I've tied a couple, I'm not very good at it. For now I buy. Next winter I plan to take a few classes.

I almost lost two st chroix rods last year when we stuck a dam huge wave lol
A gun is like a parachute. If you need one, and don't have one, you'll probably never need one again.
Damn that would have really sucked. st. chroix makes quality stuff!
