Keep an eye out for a used unit. I bought my Lincoln 180 with tank/spoolgun/helmet/consumables for $500 on CL.

I've got a Miller-Matic 180. Works awesome.
Did the wizard ever get back to you about that brain?????
Get the Lincoln, service parts will always be available, and it's a proven brand.
I had an old old Lincoln Tig welder, like from the late 50's. I was still able to get parts for it. I sold it a while back here on Motown, and I'm pretty sure it's still in service.

I used to be 'with it'. Then they changed what 'it' was. Now what I'm 'with' isn't 'it', and what's 'it' seems weird and scary to me.......

I have a 110v Lincoln in the garage and have used many 220v units, you already have the 220 and don't plan to travel with it so you mind as well get the right equipment. A welder is not something that i'd buy an off brand of, if you need parts and your in the middle of a job its nice to grab it local than wait for it to come from china.
I have a Lincoln which I love but I can't comment on other brands I haven't used. One thing I like about mine is that the dials that don't have adjustment clicks - they are "Infinitely" adjustable. Some of the cheaper migs have limited settings for wire speed and current (my friend had a Hobart and I think it had 5 clicks for wire speed and 5 for current). On the Lincoln I have, the dials have pretty much infinite settings with a rheostat type dial. That is the only recommendation I would make. You can't go wrong with Miller and Lincoln, though, that is for sure.

thanks guys, you've helped me settle on a lincoln probably a 180hd.
Last year I was in the same boat as you. In my opinion the Hobart 210MVP is the best deal going for an all around machine. It’s 120/220 so you can use it anywhere. It’s got plenty of power when needed. With a spool gun welding stainless or aluminum is a breeze. It’s one of the best garage purchases I’ve ever made.
